Indian spiritual tradition mentions the appearance of “angels” and “Yamadutas” at the time of death, but their true nature can be considered a creation of the individual’s own mind. Humans are well aware of their life’s actions; therefore, a mind filled with virtue and peace experiences auspicious manifestations, while guilt and fear create inauspicious manifestations.

This experience is not the result of any external force, but a reflection of the sanskars accumulated in the mind. The account of sin and virtue is not kept in the external world—every person witnesses it within their own inner self. This is why, in the final moments of death, a person becomes their own judge and experiences happiness or fear. Thus, angels and Yamadutas become symbols of human consciousness, not physical entities.
